Species
Liberica is a West African species with large, irregular beans and often woody/smoky/floral cup character. Cultivated notably in Malaysia, Philippines, and parts of West Africa. Excelsa (historically C. excelsa / C. liberica var. dewevrei) is modelled here as a VARIETY under Liberica per project botanical rule — not a fourth species.
TAXONOMY: Long-standing treatment is C. liberica var. liberica vs var. dewevrei (Excelsa). A 2025 Kew genomic study (Davis et al., Nature Plants) proposes C. dewevrei (Excelsa) as a separate species. This package keeps EXACTLY 3 commercial species and places Excelsa as a Liberica variety, flagging the debate. Legacy cert flags not stored as species truth.
