A 63-year-old swimmer was killed by a great white close to shore at Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs on Friday, the third fatal shark attack in Western Australia this year. Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis issued a catch-and-kill authorisation for the shark positively linked to the attack — described as an extraordinary step not used in about a decade — while saying a broad white-shark cull was not appropriate. Beaches from Marmion to Iluka in the City of Joondalup remained shut while searches continued. Authorities are also weighing more coastal drone surveillance after a separate non-fatal shark bite near Geraldton earlier in the week.
