British adventurer Karl Bushby reached his mother's house in Hull on Monday 2 November, completing a walk home from South America that began 28 years ago. This report draws on BBC News, the Guardian and CBS News. ## The journey The former paratrooper, then aged 29, set off from Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998 under two self-imposed rules: not to use transport to advance and not to return to the UK until the end, the BBC reports. His route crossed four continents, the frozen Bering Strait and the Darién Gap, and last month he swam the English Channel. CBS News says he also swam the Caspian Sea over 31 days to get around the war in Ukraine. Estimates of the distance vary: the BBC gives 31,000 miles (50,000km), the Guardian 36,000 miles and CBS about 30,000 miles. Bushby told the BBC only about 15 of the 28 years were spent walking, with visa problems, the 2007 global economic crash and Covid causing delays. ## Homecoming Crowds welcomed Bushby in Hull city centre, where he said: "There has never been a welcome home like this, I am sure. It's madness," the BBC reports. "The biggest team - Earth - got me back here," he added. His mother Angela, who had not seen him for a decade, waited at the family home as agreed years earlier and asked him: "Where have you been?" At the door he said: "It's good to be home. It feels surreal." The Guardian reports that Prime Minister Andy Burnham sent a message, read out by Labour MP Karl Turner, congratulating him on a "truly remarkable" feat. Bushby told the BBC he is working with filmmaker Werner Herzog on a documentary and on a second book, and said: "I'm hanging my boots up."
