Russia reports cyberattacks as parliamentary election enters final day
Officials say Moscow online voting and Far East communications were targeted
Russian election officials said voting systems faced continuing cyberattacks during the three-day parliamentary poll ending 20 September, while claiming incidents were being repelled.
Russia’s Central Election Commission said the Moscow online voting system came under a strong overnight attack during the multi-day State Duma election, with further incidents continuing but “under control,” according to state media. The digital ministry separately reported a sabotage attempt on Far East communications lines that it said was thwarted. Voting runs 18–20 September and is widely expected to be framed by the Kremlin as endorsement of President Putin’s policies, including the war in Ukraine now in its fifth year. The ballot coincides with intensified fighting reporting from Ukraine and renewed discussion in Washington about possible deals with Moscow short of a full war settlement.
